Carpet is Bad

Why You Should Replace Your Carpet Now

If you have pets, kids, or parties, you’ll want to steer clear of this filthy, unmanageable flooring option.

Why Carpet Is Bad - Explore the benefits of Vinyl Plank Flooring - carpetgross

Carpet acts as a filter that traps dirt, germs, bugs and allergens in your home. As a homeowner, you know that filters need to be changed or cleaned regularly in order for them to work properly. Even your vacuum cleaner filter needs to be washed – with soap and water – every 3-4 months. Current research indicates the carpet in your home is harboring about 200,000 bacteria (such as E. coli, staph, and salmonella) on every square inch! That’s about 4,000 times as much as your toilet seat. Many viruses can survive in carpet for extended amounts of time, longer than on dry wood or tile surfaces. The Norwalk virus – which causes flu like symptoms, and salmonella can survive for well over a month.
Skin cells, food particles, and pollen can all feed the bacteria and other living organisms in your carpeting. Vacuums can remove some of them – but not all. If you’re concerned about germs, bacteria, or bugs you can’t even see with the naked eye, you’re recommended to have your carpet professionally cleaned more than three times a year! And that’s just to keep those gross creepy crawlers and bacteria at a minimum! How often do you have your carpet cleaned? I bet there is NO WAY it’s that often. It’s just not reasonable. You don’t have the time or money to keep up with it! Who does?

Dust Mites

Dust mites are a microscopic arachnid that feed on the dead skin cells and animal dander that you leave for them in your carpet. Want to know something unsettling? Over 100,000 dust mites can be found in around 10 square feet of carpet. These mites reproduce and die every 3 weeks. Dust mites’ fecal pellets and decomposing bodies cause an allergic reaction in up to 30% of any given household. In addition, homes that are heavily carpeted have such a high level of dead mites (around 100,000 every three weeks per 10 feet of carpet!) and fecal pellets that 50% of the remaining household that isn’t allergic to dust mites will also exhibit symptoms of an allergy ranging from common cold like symptoms and skin rashes to difficulty breathing. They may also cause asthma and eczema.

Fungi

A study done in 2002 found that even non-problematic, moisture free homes with proper cleaning could harbor various fungi species within their padding. In the test, a clean bedroom floor with no moisture source presented 18 species of active fungus. Humidity or moisture from bathrooms, kitchens, plumbing and other environmental influences can increase this number. Fungi and molds are another known source of allergies and certain types can release toxic chemicals known as mycotoxins. Pollen and other unpleasant ingredients: Much of what ends up in carpet is walked in from outside. This can include but is not limited to pollen, plant particles, fecal matter, sand, gravel, pesticides, ash, lead, arsenic, soil and bug bits. Pollen and certain types of plants are yet another common allergen.

Pet Urine & Sh*t

Yeah, we’re serious with this one! Unfortunately, pets will have accidents on your carpet, and if not cleaned immediately from your carpet, you could be facing some potentially serious effects on your health. “How?” you ask .. Let us tell you. Ammonia – The most noticeable aftermath of pet urine in carpets. This can have a TREMENDOUS negative effect on people who have COPD, asthma, or emphysema, and may even cause allergies. Bacteria – In healthy people, the bacteria found in old urine stains may cause sinusitis, watery eyes, allergies, and inflammation of the airways. This bacteria can cause even more significant health issues in people who have compromised immune systems, i.e., very young children, the elderly, or people with otherwise weakened immune systems. Dangerous Mold – The components of the urine attacts moisture, and over time, several varieties of mold can begin to grow in the padding underneath your carpet. Some of these mold varieties cause respiratory symptoms and long-term lung conditions. Don’t get rid of your family pet – get rid of your carpet!

Fleas & Ticks

Fleas & Ticks are two more blood sucking insects that also find carpet padding an ideal place to lay eggs and/or hide. Fleas are one of the more common external parasites hosting on dogs and cats worldwide. In addition to being a nuisance, fleas are responsible for flea allergy dermatitis which is estimated to account for just over 50% of dermatological cases reported to veterinarians. Fleas are carriers of all sorts of bacteria, including bacteria that causes disease in people. While fleas are the more commonly found intruder, ticks can carry harmful diseases and pose a huge health risk, such as Lyme disease and many other diseases. Your carpet is the perfect environment for both of these annoying parasites to not only feed on bacteria, but also nest their eggs! Gross!

Troublesome Stains

Carpet acts as a sponge when food or drinks are spilled allowing these materials to soak deep into the carpet fibers and ultimately into the padding. Not only are you left with ugly stains that can be tiresome to remove, it also creates a breeding ground for various types of mold which increase indoor allergies.

Pet Dander

Pet dander is basically skin flakes, oils and hair from animals. Carpet traps this dander. Even if you don’t have any pets, dander can come in on shoes, blow in through doors and windows or be brought in with visitors and then stored right in your carpet.
